Hotels in Spain by Mark Tolner

At 194,884 mi², 504,782 km², Spain is the world's 51st-largest country. It is comparable in size to Turkmenistan, and is somewhat larger than the U.S. state of California.
On the west, Spain borders Portugal, on the south, it borders Gibralatr and Morocco, through its cities in North Africa, Ceuta and Melilla. On the northeast, along the Pyrenees mountain range, it borders France and the tiny principality of Andorra. Spain also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean and a number of uninhabited islands on the Mediterranean side of the strait of Gibraltar, known as Plazas de soberanía, such as the Chafarine islands, the isle of Alborán, the rocks of Velez and Alhucemas, and the tiny Isla Perejil. In the northeast along the Pyrenees, a small exclave town called Llivia in Catalonia is surrounded by French territory.

Spain can be enjoyable any time of year. The ideal months to visit are May, June and September, and also April and October in the south, and any time of the year down on the Costa del Sol. At these times you can rely on good-to-excellent weather, yet avoid the extreme heat - and the main crush of Spanish and foreign tourists - of July and August.

Spain remains a holiday favourite and it's easy to see why - its vibrant and distinctive culture is evident throughout the country, from the independent mountain villages and cosmopolitan cities to the intimate coastal retreats and bustling beach resorts, both on the mainland and the popular Balearic Islands. Local flavour, fine food, and old town charm combine with legendary and diverse nightlife to offer a world of holiday opportunity.

Sol Melia is the leading hotel chain in Spain, the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Sol Melia provides luxury as well as cheap hotels in Spain.

The Spanish Paradores are hotels for luxury accommodation in castles, palaces, fortresses, convents, monasteries and similar historic buildings. There are also modern hotels, built in traditional style, in areas of outstanding beauty. The Paradors of Spain are so much more than mere hotels.  They are repositories of the romance and passion that is the history of this country.

Madrid, founded by the Moors in the 9th Century, is currently a modern, active city offering innumerable attractions to the visitor. Its architectural heritage is immense. The medieval village has been preserved around the Plaza de la Paja. The quarter known as Madrid of the Austrian, near the Puerta del Sol, the traditional city centre was built in the Golden Age. In this area are the Plaza Mayor, which is colonaded and considered to be one of the finest in Spain, and the Plaza de la Villa, with its beautiful City Hall Building, both Baroque in style and dating from the 17th century.

Barcelona is a progressive, industrial, middle-class and European city, while at the same time being traditionalist, popular, typically Mediterranean and having a pleasant climate. This dichotomy between tradition and progress is a characteristic of both the city and it's nearly two million inhabitants.
